    Real Estate Science Abstract

Last week, I submitted a three sentence proposal to present at the Real Estate Educators Association conference which will take place at Morehead University, Kentucky this upcoming August. The topic of my proposal is on Real Estate Science and why the industry needs a new scientific field of study.

Below is the full abstract for the upcoming paper entitled, “Real Estate Science: The Rise of a New Scientific Field of Study”:

The Internet and World Wide Web have been immensely influential factors on the real estate industry. From sales brokerages to daily activities by salespeople, computers are involved in every facet of today’s real estate businesses’ projects and transactions. With millions of mobile and office devices connected to the Internet, the real estate industry has fully embraced and embedded technology within every layer of itself. Thus, one can say that technology has transformed the real estate industry from a one-dimensional industry centered solely around financial analysis into a mission critical, technology dependent industry overnight.

To better understand how the Internet and the World Wide Web have affected the Real Estate Industry, this paper proposes a new scientific field of study to help analyze, study, theorize and document relevant scientific discoveries so the real estate industry may continue to grow with necessary efficiency and technical relevancy. This paper discusses the needs and justifications for a new academic discipline called Real Estate Science (Re-Sci) which combines the theories and concepts from the Real Estate and Computer Science academic fields, respectively. It also investigates other industries which have already embraced Computer Science as an academic component by comparing and contrasting their industry characteristics and evolutions. In addition, current trends and potential use cases will be presented to demonstrate why Real Estate Science is necessary to define and continue to evolve into a beneficial academic research area for everyone involved in the real estate industry presently and into the future.

If accepted, I will also publish the paper on my papers website.

    Academic and Scientific Papers Website

This past weekend I worked on publishing my science paper presented at ARES on the Multiple Listing Service Network Protocol to a new site for my academic and scientific papers.

Following up the MLSN paper, I will next publish my nonprofit term paper on RDASE: The Anatomy of the Research Development Activity Service Engine. This paper’s aim is to develop a workflow framework for the GR8C covering new research, publishing papers, and grant submissions.

Moving forward, I have started preliminary research on my next paper, Real Estate Science: The Rise of a New Scientific Field of Study. This paper will be submitted to the 2013 ARES conference which will be held in Kona, Hawaii (aka my hometown). In addition, I plan to submit a second paper to ARES either on Real Estate Transport Protocol (RETP) or Real Estate Geographic Names System (REGNS).

    Happy First Birthday WWMLS

Last Saturday marked the first birthday for the World Wide MLS (WWMLS). Since then, the follow progress has been made towards WWMLS:

As MLSN is presented to different groups such as academics and technologists, I am confident with the two upcoming presentations in 2012, especially in St. Petersburg at ARES, that the MLSN Protocol and WWMLS framework will alter others’ thought processes of not only the dysfunctional aspect of today’s legacy MLS, but also future directions in how real estate consumers interact and expect a specific quality of service (QoS) from real estate professionals. The main intention is integrate WWMLS in every aspect of the future of real estate.

Moving foward, the second phase for WWMLS will be the introduction of the messaging language called Real Estate Metadata Language (Remetal). This XML language will be used to markup properties in a self-describing, yet simple language for sending and receiving between the main OpenMLS Registry and accredited OpenMLS Registrars. I plan to propose Remetal to additional call for papers (CFP) on the academic and technical levels in 2012.

The third yet most important phase will be for the Real Estate Transport Protocol (RETP). This protocol defines the type of messaging, the distribution channels, error correction system, etc. Again, RETP papers will be proposed along with exhibitions at national and if necessary global science fairs.

The future of real estate is bright and changing.

And as the cliche goes, please stay tuned…

    My Lost Theory

    Lost

A couple of weeks ago I was sick with the flu. I spent Saturday on the couch with my soup and a head cold in a miserable state.

Lucky for me, I subscribe to Netflix so I decided to rewatch Season 1 of Lost. I really didn’t watch Season 1′s episodes the first time so I thought I would pay closer attention to details this time. Anyway, I was sick and had nothing better to do.

After rewatching a few of the episodes, it dawned on me what was happening on the island and to the Lost characters.

I will stop here and warn you. If you do not want to know my theory or learn about any spoilers then do not scroll down this page. I will not be upset if you turn the donkey wheel and transport yourself elsewhere.

But, if you do want to know my theory, I will give you three chances to stop and reconsider before revealing my theory, a la Locke with Charlie when Charlie wanted his drugs.

Locke teaching Walt how to play backgammon.

    It’s a Game: Backgammon

After watching the episode with Locke and Walt on the beach playing a certain game together, I realized that Lost was a human backgammon game between Jacob and the Man in Black. The Lost characters are the pieces and the island is the game board.

In backgammon, to win a player must get all of his/her pieces off the board first. In Lost, the goal is get off the island first which the Man in Black is trying to do in Season 6.

    The Playing Pieces: the characters

Also, black and white playing pieces are used in backgammon. So if you notice Jacob wears white and the Man in Black wears, well, black. After being ‘claimed’, Sayeed and Claire now wear black meaning that they are ‘pieces’ of the Man in Black. Remember, Dogan said there’s a darkness growing within Sayeed meaning that he was turning into a black playing piece.

    The Numbers: 4 8 15 16 23 42

    doubling cube

4, 8, 16 are all numbers on the six-sided doubling cube. In backgammon, there are two-sets of 15 playing pieces. On the board, points are numbered and one point is notably numbered, 23-point . And for the last number, 42 is an opening roll strategy in backgammon.

    Final Episode Hope

Having said all of this, my hope is that in the final episode we will finally see a full shot of the entire Lost island. I may be wrong, but we have yet to see the entire landscape and topology of the island, a bird’s eye view. I found a few probable Lost island shots on Google Images. As you can see in this image, the forests on the island make up points just like those on a backgammon game board.

My final hope for the last episode is a camera shot of an old, almost ancient backgammon board used by Jacob and the Man in Black somewhere on the island. I think whomever the next candidate to protect the island will inherit the game to play against the Man in Black or the next nemesis. Because there must be two players to play.

    Backgammon on Wikipedia

If you are still skeptical of my theory, I encourage you to read the backgammon page on Wikipedia. There you will find the history of the game, men used as playing pieces, the numbers, the Jacoby Rule, and a technique called bearing off (polar bears).

Please feel free to leave comments for me if you agree, disgree, or have other thoughts. If you have a better theory I would love to read it. Lost is a masterpiece and I have loved watching every minute!
